What is the connection between the awesome & cranky doyenne of the avant-garde,

Gertrude Stein,
and ACLU v. Reno, the very first Supreme Court case that dealt with cyberspace law issues?
The “Reno” in ACLU v. Reno stands for Reno Nevada. No, just kidding. It stands for the (then) Attorney General of the United States of America:

Janet Reno. Ms. Reno, if you’re nasty!
So can you guess the connection between Gertrude Stein and the Supreme Court case? No? Stumped? Hint: It has to do with Gertrude Stein’s famous ex-pat impression of the fair city of Oakland, California, her childhood hood …
After spending years and years in Paris, Ms. Stein made a journey back to Oakland and found that all the concrete landmarks of her past, including the house where she had grown up, had long since disappeared from the landscape of the city. So she made a remark, destined to become (in)famous, that the trouble with Oakland was that:

It came across as a dis but ultimately was just an innocent emotional response upon realizing that home was no longer home. Fast forward to the case, with the court facing the challenge of applying the brick-and-mortar world’s zoning laws to the amorphous cyberspace, and Justice Stevens (I think he’s the one who said it) channeled Stein and observed that when it comes to the Internet, “there is no there there” or conversely that the “there” is everywhere.
And there you have it. No pun intended.
